About the Goldsmiths

Gary Goldsmith
From his Portsmouth, New Hampshire roots, Gary learned about woodworking and design at the hands of colonial craftsmen and shipbuilders. In a family of master craftsmen, he learned the use of tools at an early age. Putting his skills to use, Gary worked his way through college apprenticing with some of Portsmouth’s most renowned builders.

After college, he turned in his saw for a sail and joined the US Navy. Serving his country for four years, Gary returned to pick up his saw, and the rest is history.

Embarking on the business end of the construction field, Gary held supervisory positions with FA Gray Painting Contractors and The Wentworth-by-the-Sea Hotels, where he had the privilege of working with the English craftsman, Mr. Turner. Under his direction, Gary studied furniture finishing and learned high-end stain and paint finishing techniques.

Additional studies included courses on blueprints and building design. His Real Estate license fresh in hand, Gary’s first transaction was a project for which he acted as designer, builder and sale negotiator, an office/meeting complex for a regional Tupperware franchise.

In the early 1980’s The Goldsmith Company was formed and began successfully building custom homes in the New Hampshire seacoast region.

By the early 1990’s, New Hampshire was experiencing a significant market downturn, so Gary made the move to New Jersey and opened The Goldsmith Company’s second location in 1998. The New Hampshire branch has now closed and Gary, along with his wife Karin, devote all of their time to their New Jersey clients.

Karin McMillan Goldsmith

Karin’s 1st project at Smith was their office furnishings showroom renovation for which she won the national “Geyers Award” in 1986. Other projects included are “Timberland Headquarters”, “Kendall Insurance”, “National Sea Products”, “Simplex Cable” and various Financial & Legal Institutions. Karin stayed with Smith Office until 1991 when she then went out on her own and broke into the Residential market specializing in Kitchen & Bath Design.
